Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Campus at Hydrabad
HYDERABAD: Hyderabad has emerged as a knowledge and technology centre of repute and it has been befittingly chosen for establishing the new campus of Tata Insitute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), prime minister Manmohan Singh has said.Speaking after laying the foundation stone for TIFR's Hyderabad campus at Gachibowli here today, he emphasised the need for expanding human resource in the area of science and technology to maintain competitive advantage in the knowledge economy. He also stressed the need to create a stimulating institutional environment through innovation and pursuit of excellence.
"The scientific and technological prowess of a nation is a major determinant of its state of development. Innovation and knowledge will be the key factors in a nation's progress. We must, therefore, foster an environment that promotes and nurtures scientific achievement and makes us a world leader in creating intellectual property," he said and called for strengthening of scientific infrastructure, drawing the brightest minds to scientific research and creating institutions of the highest standards of excellence.
Chief minister K Rosaiah wanted the research activity at TIFR not only to deepen knowledge but also to help the common man lead a dignified life. He said the state government allotted 209 acres to TIFR in a prime area which proves its commitment to the cause of scientific education, research and institution-building. He said the state government wanted to bring together various institutions as part of its long-term plan to foster innovation and progress in the areas of health, communication, education and biotechnology. TIFR is planning to start its operations on the Hyderabad campus from 2013 and will develop the 209-acre campus over a period of 10 years till 2022. About 1,200 students can pursue research in the fields of life, light and matter. The institute has already entered into a memorandum of understanding with the University of Hyderabad for joint research activities.
Governor ESL Narasimhan, Union minister for law Veerappa Moily, Atomic Energy Commission chairman Srikumar Banerjee, TIFR director Mustansir Barma and other dignitaries were present. A large number of scientists and academicians also attended the event.
Meanwhile, some students and staff of the university, who are opposed to alienation of 209 acres of the university to TIFR, staged a protest and burned the state government in effigy near the university gate. Grant of Rs.10 Crore for 200 Acre Gopanaplli TIFR Campus
Hyderabad may not have found a mention in finance minister Pranab Mukherjees budget speech this year, but tucked away in the fine print of the budget document was a Rs 10-crore grant for the proposed campus of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) at Gopanapalli here.
The grant will facilitate the setting up of the TIFRs second campus outside of Mumbai. Mooted two years ago during the reign of late chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, the TIFR campus is slated to come up at a proposed investment of Rs 2500 crore over a period of 12-15 years in two phases.
Around 200 acres of land has already been allocated for the campus within the University of Hyderabad campus. The move is expected to strengthen Hyderabads standing as a world class R&D hub. TIFR is an autonomous institute under the umbrella of the department of atomic energy, government of India, and is engaged in basic research in physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computer sciences.
Though TIFR, which was established in 1945, has smaller campuses in Pune and Bangalore for dedicated disciplines and has research facilities in other parts of the country, the Hyderabad campus is the only second integrated campus outside of Mumbai.
It is expected to have a permanent faculty strength of 200 along with nearly 1000 students and 300 post doctoral researchers as well as 400 technical and 500 nontechnical staff by 2020.
TIFR Campus occupies three sides of Gopanaplli T junction. The entire land has been secured with compound wall and master planning for the campus is in progress. The campus faces Road from Gopanaplli to Vattinagapalli ORR as well as Road from Gopanaplli to Gachibowli Financial District.
